Michael James Spaulding

Michael James Spaulding, aged 56, passed away peacefully of natural causes on November 30, 2024, in Rapid City, South Dakota. Born on September 6, 1968, at Travis Air Force Base, California, Michael was a man of remarkable creativity and passion who carved out a life as rich and detailed as his woodwork.

Michael’s journey began as the beloved son of Georgeann Bates-Pesek and grew to include a loving family. He was a cherished brother to Kim Spaulding and Joseph Bell; father to Bronte, Nicholas, and Jacob; and husband to Susan Spaulding. He was also a treasured uncle, nephew, and friend to numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles who will carry his memory forward. He was preceded in death by his father, James  Spaulding, paternal and maternal grandparents. Despite not pursuing higher education, Michael’s intelligence and determination, proving that traditional paths are not the only routes to success. His life was a testament to the value of hands-on learning and the power of following one’s passions. Michael’s professional life was a reflection of his inner creativity. A longtime Master-Carpenter with Ironwood, a custom cabinet company known for its exquisite craftsmanship. His work was not just a job but a calling, as he traveled across the United States to create bespoke woodworking pieces, leaving a legacy of beauty in homes throughout the country. Beyond his work, Michael was a talented artist, whose creative spirit found expression in both wood and on canvas. His hands, ever so skilled, brought to life visions of beauty that were as much a joy to create as they were to behold. Those who knew Michael understood that his work was an extension of his love for life and the people he cared for. Michael lived his life with a loving heart and a passionate soul, qualities that endeared him to all who knew him. He was a man who could find the essence of joy in the simplest of things, and his presence was a source of comfort and inspiration. In the words of Leonardo da Vinci, “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” Michael embodied this sentiment in every aspect of his life. He was a man who knew that the most profound truths are often found in the simplest of creations, and he pursued both his work and his relationships with a straightforward sincerity that was as rare as it was refreshing.
